Today in the Portland Press Herald it was reported that the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is a mixture of high tech features and historic buildings, a mixture that sometimes clashes. Being more than 217 years old, many buildings are in need of repair, but cannot be just rebuilt because they are buildings on the historic preservation list. In one instance, the PNSY redesigned a parking garage in order to spare an ox stable that was designed by the architect of Boston’s historic Quincy Market. A shipyard officer stated: “They have buildings there that were constructed when sailing vessels ruled the seas. Now they’re serving the most technically sophisticated vessels in the world.”
