A massive and unusual bloom of algae in Casco Bay in the Portland area, is potentially lethal to fish, shellfish and other marine animals.  This is the first time that the Karenia mikimotoi form of algae has occurred in Maine waters, as far as the state knows.  It has already cost up to $250,000 in lost shift-shell clams in Maquoit Bay in Brunswick.  This type of bloom is not hazardous to people but has caused fish deaths inAsia, Europe and Alaska.
