In the news today, there was an incredible event in outer space that took place tens of millions of years ago, but the light from that event only reached earth this past August. Two neutron stars, which are masses as great as the sun but packed in to a space the size of Manhattan, collided at nearly the speed of light. The collision, known as a kilonova, set off sensors in space and on Earth and produced a large chirp in antennas. Scientists from around the globe who witnessed this event presented it to the public only yesterday, confirming a theory posed by Einstein 100 years ago that space and time could shake like a bowl of jelly when two massive objects in the universe move around. One astrophysicist said of the discovery: “We’re living the dream.”
